Trae Young Lands 4-Year, $212M Deal to Stay With Wizards

Trae Young is set to sign a four-year, roughly $212 million deal to remain with the Washington Wizards, the four-time NBA All-Star’s representatives confirmed, committing the star guard to the rebuilding franchise in one of the most hotly debated contracts of the 2026 offseason.

The Details of the Deal

Young declined his $49 million player option to pursue the long-term agreement, which includes a player option in the fourth year. The contract will pay him an average of roughly $53 million per season. According to reports, the deal lands below the maximum he could have signed in Washington but matches the maximum he could have secured elsewhere.

The agreement comes just days after Young entered unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career. NBA free agency officially opens June 30, but Young moved early to lock in his future with the Wizards.

How Young Got to Washington

Young’s path to this contract ran through a midseason blockbuster. The Atlanta Hawks dealt him to Washington in early January in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. He played sparingly down the stretch, appearing in just a handful of games for the Wizards while dealing with injuries, and averaged 17.9 points and 8.0 assists across his combined time with the Hawks and Wizards on the season.

Washington traded for Young to be the on-court engine for its young core, and the front office paired that move with the acquisition of big man Anthony Davis. The team believes a Young-Davis duo can accelerate its timeline and push toward playoff contention.

A Polarizing Price Tag

The deal immediately split the NBA world. Critics questioned the wisdom of committing four years and $212 million to a guard coming off an injury-shortened, limited stretch with the team, with some analysts arguing the contract is significantly above his projected on-court value. On social media, fans debated whether Washington was bidding against itself.

Others defended the move. Former NBA champion Richard Jefferson argued that, given the league’s current pay structure and where Young has positioned himself since being drafted in 2018, a $200-million-plus contract is well-earned for a player of his caliber and offensive gravity.

What It Means for the Wizards

The contract signals that Washington is serious about building around Young now rather than waiting. With Davis on board, the Wizards are betting that an established, high-usage playmaker can lift a young roster and shorten a rebuild that has tested the patience of the fan base.

It also raises the stakes. A deal of this size intensifies pressure to win, and the front office’s subsequent roster decisions, including how it manages its young assets and future cap flexibility, will be shaped by the commitment to Young.

What’s Next

With Young locked in, attention turns to how Washington rounds out its roster ahead of the new league year and whether the Young-Davis pairing can deliver the leap the franchise is banking on. The early returns on this contract will be measured not just in points and assists, but in wins, and whether the Wizards can finally climb back into playoff contention. Watch the analysis below.
