Patrick Mahomes Cleared for Chiefs Camp — 'I Feel Amazing'

Patrick Mahomes is officially back. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has been fully cleared to practice without limitations as training camp opens in St. Joseph, Missouri, a little more than seven months after the torn ACL and LCL that ended his 2025 season. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed the news Friday, declaring his franchise quarterback a full go as quarterbacks and rookies reported to camp, instantly transforming the outlook for a team desperate to put a disappointing 2025 campaign behind it.
The injury itself was one of the most jarring moments of last season. Mahomes tore both his anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament on December 14, and surgeons performed reconstructive surgery the very next day, on December 15. A multi-ligament knee injury of that severity typically carries a recovery window of nine months to a full year, which made Friday's clearance — arriving comfortably ahead of schedule — all the more remarkable for Kansas City's medical and performance staff.
The final green light came from Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys team physician who is widely regarded as one of the country's foremost specialists in LCL injuries and who performed the original reconstruction. Cooper signed off on Mahomes' knee just two days before the Chiefs' report date, clearing the three-time Super Bowl MVP to participate fully in every drill, every install period, and every team session from the first practice onward.
Mahomes, for his part, sounded like a man who never doubted the timeline. He told reporters he feels amazing and insisted the injury may have left him in the best shape of his career. He said he feels stronger than he has ever felt in terms of pure strength and weight-room numbers, crediting a rehab program that consumed nearly every day of his offseason and stripped away the usual distractions of a quarterback's summer.
The rehab process also became a networking exercise in resilience. Mahomes consulted Tom Brady, who famously returned from his own knee reconstruction to win three more Super Bowls, as well as former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu. Perhaps the most useful conversations came with tight end Zach Ertz, who suffered a nearly identical ACL-LCL combination and returned to a full workload. Mahomes has said Ertz's comeback gave him a competitive benchmark: if Ertz could beat the timeline, so could he.
There will be visible reminders of the injury. Mahomes will wear a stabilizing knee brace throughout camp and likely into the season, a standard precaution for multi-ligament reconstructions in their first year. He acknowledged the brace takes some getting used to but said it has not affected his comfort running the offense, planting on his surgically repaired leg, or delivering the off-platform throws that define his game.
For the Chiefs, the stakes could hardly be higher. Kansas City stumbled to a disappointing finish in 2025 after Mahomes went down, missing the deep playoff run the franchise had come to treat as a birthright. The roster around him remains championship-caliber, and general manager Brett Veach spent the offseason reinforcing both lines. A healthy Mahomes immediately vaults the Chiefs back into the AFC's top tier, and oddsmakers reacted to Friday's news accordingly.
Mahomes was candid about how the injury will shape his approach. He wants to get the ball out of his hand quicker this season and lean less on the scrambling that has produced some of his most iconic moments — and his most dangerous hits. The Week 1 opener remains his stated target, and while he left the door open to limited preseason action, both he and Reid suggested the team will be deliberately conservative with August snaps.
The clearance headlined a frantic opening week of NFL training camps, with all 32 teams set to report by July 28. Around the league, the Panthers lost defensive end Nic Scourton to a reported ACL tear, the Ravens made a surprise cut of quarterback Diego Pavia, and the Raiders agreed to terms with Fernando Mendoza. But no storyline moves the needle like the health of the sport's most famous knee.
Inside the locker room, the reaction was equal parts relief and excitement. Teammates have described Mahomes as obsessive throughout the rehab, often the first player in the building. Reid, entering another season with Super Bowl expectations, said the quarterback's energy has set the tone for the entire roster before a single padded practice has taken place.
There is still a long road between a July clearance and January football. The Chiefs will manage Mahomes' workload carefully in St. Joseph, monitoring swelling and response after consecutive practice days, and the true test will come when live pass rushes arrive in September. But for a fan base that spent seven months holding its breath, Friday delivered the only headline that mattered: Patrick Mahomes is healthy, cleared, and chasing another ring.
