Enola Holmes 3 Streaming on Netflix — Malta Mystery & Wedding

The game is afoot once again — and this time, the stakes are personal. Enola Holmes 3 premiered on Netflix on July 1, bringing Millie Bobby Brown back as literature’s most irrepressible teenage detective for a third adventure that trades the fog of London for the sun-drenched island of Malta. Over the July 4th holiday weekend, the film shot up the streamer’s charts as families settled in for the franchise’s most ambitious chapter yet.

The setup flips the series’ formula on its head. This time it is not a missing marquess or a vanished mother driving the plot — it is Sherlock Holmes himself. Henry Cavill’s velvet-voiced version of the great detective has been kidnapped, and it falls to his younger sister to unravel a conspiracy that stretches from the streets of London to the harbors of the Mediterranean.

As if rescuing the world’s most famous detective were not enough, Enola is also heading to the altar. The film finds her preparing to wed Lord Tewkesbury, the floppy-haired viscount played by Louis Partridge whose slow-burn romance with Enola has anchored the series since the 2020 original. The collision of wedding planning and life-or-death sleuthing gives the third film its comic engine — and its emotional core.

The returning cast is one of the deepest Netflix has assembled for a franchise film. Helena Bonham Carter is back as Eudoria Holmes, the radical matriarch who taught Enola everything from jiu-jitsu to cryptography. Himesh Patel steps in as Dr. John Watson, finally completing the classic Baker Street ensemble. And Sharon Duncan-Brewster returns as Moriarty, the freshly reimagined arch-nemesis whose shadow hangs over the entire affair.

The official trailer, released by Netflix three weeks before the premiere, has pulled in more than three million views on YouTube — with a teaser adding three million more. The two-and-a-half-minute preview leans into the film’s bigger scope: Maltese fortresses, moonlit chases, coded letters, and Brown delivering her trademark fourth-wall-breaking asides directly to the camera.

That direct address remains the franchise’s secret weapon. Adapted from Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes Mysteries novels, the films have always distinguished themselves from the crowded field of Sherlock adaptations by letting their heroine talk to the audience like a co-conspirator. Early viewer reaction suggests the third film doubles down on the device, with Brown’s winking narration carrying some of the film’s biggest laughs.

For Brown, the film caps a remarkable stretch. Fresh off the final season of Stranger Things, the 22-year-old star has grown up on Netflix, and Enola Holmes has become her signature franchise as both star and producer through her company PCMA Productions. Her chemistry with Cavill — whose Sherlock is warmer and more brotherly here than in either previous installment, even in captivity — continues to be the series’ beating heart.

The Malta setting is more than a postcard backdrop. Production filmed extensively on the island, and the location work gives the film a scale the first two chapters — largely confined to London townhouses and English countryside — never attempted. Critics have singled out the Mediterranean sequences as evidence that Netflix treated the third entry as a summer tentpole rather than a streaming afterthought.

Fan reaction over the holiday weekend has been enthusiastic, with social media praising the film’s balance of caper energy and genuine emotional payoff for Enola and Tewkesbury’s long-running romance. The wedding storyline, which could easily have felt like a series finale, instead plays as a graduation: Enola Woods no longer fighting for a seat at the table, but running her own detective agency on her own terms.

The big question now is whether the story continues. Springer’s book series offers plenty of un-adapted material, and both Brown and the filmmakers have signaled openness to more if audiences show up. Given the franchise’s track record — the first two films rank among Netflix’s most-watched originals — a fourth chapter feels less like a possibility and more like an inevitability.

For viewers planning a weekend watch, all three Enola Holmes films are streaming on Netflix now, making a full trilogy marathon an easy sell for mystery fans of any age. The films remain rare all-ages crowd-pleasers: sharp enough for adults, breezy enough for kids, and anchored by one of the most likable heroines in modern franchise filmmaking.

The film also arrives at a strategic moment for Netflix. July’s slate is stacked — Silo season 3 on Apple TV+, the Legally Blonde prequel Elle on Prime Video, and a Big Bang Theory spin-off on HBO Max are all competing for the same holiday-week eyeballs — and the streamer is counting on a proven family franchise to hold the top of its own charts. Franchise films with built-in audiences have become the most reliable currency in the streaming wars, and few Netflix originals have the brand recognition Enola Holmes has built across two hit installments.

It is worth remembering how unlikely this franchise was. The first film was a pandemic-era acquisition from Warner Bros. that Netflix picked up when theaters were shuttered, and it became a surprise phenomenon — spawning a sequel, a legion of young fans, and even a legal skirmish with the Conan Doyle estate over Sherlock’s emotions, which the filmmakers won. Five years later, what began as a stopgap release is one of the streamer’s most dependable properties.

The costume and production design teams once again deserve their flowers. The Victorian-era wardrobe gets a Mediterranean makeover this time, trading heavy London wool for linen and lace, while the wedding sequences give the designers their most lavish canvas yet. Between the Malta vistas and the period detail, it is among the best-looking films Netflix has released this year.
