China Lands Reusable Rocket for First Time — SpaceX Rivalry Grows

China has landed a reusable rocket for the first time, successfully recovering the first stage of a carrier rocket during an orbital launch — a breakthrough that dramatically narrows the technology gap with American launch providers and reshapes the economics of the global space race.


The Long March 10B rocket lifted off from Hainan island in southern China on Friday. Roughly six minutes after the first and upper stages separated, the booster executed a controlled descent and returned to a floating platform at sea, where it was captured by a net-based recovery system. It is the first time any Chinese rocket stage has been recovered during an actual orbital mission rather than a low-altitude hop test.


The recovery method itself is notable. Rather than landing on legs the way SpaceX’s Falcon 9 boosters do, the Long March 10B first stage was secured via a net-capture system mounted on a seaborne platform. The approach echoes techniques SpaceX has explored for fairing recovery and that Rocket Lab has attempted with helicopters, but applying it to a full orbital-class booster is a first.


Why it matters comes down to cost and cadence. Expendable rockets throw away their most expensive hardware on every flight. Reusability collapses both the price per launch and the turnaround time between missions — the twin advantages that let SpaceX flood orbit with Starlink satellites and dominate the commercial launch market for the better part of a decade. Until now, only SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin had demonstrated the capability.


Chinese officials framed the milestone in exactly those terms. State broadcaster commentary emphasized that reusability means hardware can be brought home and flown again, transforming launch from a bespoke, one-shot enterprise into something closer to airline operations. That shift is a prerequisite for the megaconstellations, crewed lunar ambitions, and rapid-response military launch capabilities Beijing has been signaling for years.


The strategic dimension is impossible to separate from the technical one. Space has become increasingly linked to military power and terrestrial defense capability — satellite reconnaissance, encrypted communications, missile warning, and precision navigation all run through orbit. A nation that can launch cheaply and frequently can replenish and expand those assets faster than an adversary can degrade them.


That context sharpens recent reporting that Russia and China have deepened military-technical cooperation, with Moscow sharing operational lessons from the Ukraine war while Beijing supplies electronics, semiconductors, and equipment. Analysts have noted a shared focus on countering Western satellite networks like Starlink, with discussion reportedly extending to measures up to and including the destruction of satellites.


For the United States, the Long March 10B landing is a clear signal that the reusable-launch monopoly is ending. SpaceX still holds an enormous lead in flight-proven hardware, reflight cadence, and accumulated operational data — Falcon boosters have flown dozens of times each. But the gap is now one of degree rather than kind, and China’s state-backed program is not constrained by the quarterly logic of private capital.


The Long March 10 family is central to China’s crewed lunar ambitions, with the base variant designed to carry taikonauts toward the Moon. Making the booster reusable would slash the cost of the repeated launches a sustained lunar program requires, and it strengthens Beijing’s claim that it can put humans on the lunar surface before the end of the decade.


Skeptics will rightly note that a single successful recovery is not an operational capability. SpaceX needed years of failures, refinements, and reflights to turn its first dramatic landing into routine reuse. The real test for China will be whether the recovered stage can be inspected, refurbished, and flown again — and how quickly that cycle can be compressed.


Still, the image of a Chinese orbital booster settling into a net on a platform in the South China Sea is a milestone that will be studied in Washington, Hawthorne, and Kourou alike. The reusable era, once an American story, is now a contested one. The next chapter belongs to whoever can fly the same rocket again — and again — the fastest.
