Marvel Studios has finally shown its hand. The first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday arrived online on the morning of July 20, and by Saturday night the studio had commandeered Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con with the film’s enormous cast assembled on stage for the first time. The one-two punch made Doomsday the biggest story of the convention weekend, handing fans their clearest look yet at Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — not as Tony Stark, but as its new arch-villain, Victor Von Doom.
The trailer opens quietly. Doom sits on a throne while Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm explains in voice-over just how broken a man he really is. The Fantastic Four know Doom in a way the rest of the MCU’s heroes do not, and the footage leans hard on that shared history. “Everything he loved was taken from him,” Sue says — a line that frames Doom less as a cackling conqueror and more as a wounded genius who has decided the multiverse itself owes him restitution.
Then the trailer stops being quiet. Doom raises an army of Sentinels — the towering mutant-hunting machines that X-Men fans have waited decades to see realized properly on the big screen — and turns them loose on the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men all at once. It is the three-franchise collision Marvel has been promising since the Disney-Fox merger closed, and the sheer scale on display suggests the studio is treating Doomsday as an event on the level of Infinity War.
The hero roster is staggering. Alongside Downey Jr., the film reunites Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Evans, whose return has been one of the project’s most talked-about surprises, with Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier all flashing across the screen in rapid succession.
The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts squads round out the modern MCU contingent. Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Kirby’s Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing carry a complicated past with Doom into the fight, while Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman bring the Thunderbolts — now rebranded as the New Avengers — along for the ride.
And then there are the mutants. Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique and Channing Tatum’s Gambit all return from Fox’s X-Men era, giving the original film mutants one massive last stand. Seeing Magneto and Cyclops share a frame with Thor and Captain America is the kind of image fans have been assembling in their heads for fifteen years.
Saturday’s Hall H panel, which ran from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Pacific, pushed things further. Kevin Feige screened exclusive footage available only to the fans inside the hall, brought the headline cast out on stage, and confirmed that Avengers: Endgame Encore will return the 2019 juggernaut to theaters in September — complete with footage of fans losing their minds at opening-night screenings the first time around.
The panel also featured an emotional MCU montage that reached beyond Marvel Studios’ own library, spotlighting Fox’s X-Men films and Tobey Maguire’s scenes from Spider-Man: No Way Home. The message was unmistakable: Doomsday is being positioned as a celebration of every era of Marvel filmmaking, with two decades of continuity converging on a single December weekend.
Reaction online has been immediate and loud. The official trailer piled up millions of views across platforms within days, leaked Hall H footage spread across social media within hours despite Marvel’s efforts, and cast reveals dominated trending topics throughout the weekend. Even skeptics who cooled on the MCU’s recent output have conceded that the Doomsday footage looks like Marvel operating at full power again.
The stakes for Marvel are enormous. Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, opens the two-part climax of the Multiverse Saga, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow in December 2027. After a bumpy stretch of uneven box office results, the studio needs Doomsday to deliver — and pairing Downey Jr.’s villain turn with the X-Men’s arrival is about as strong a hand as Hollywood can play.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026. Five months out, it is already tracking as the most anticipated release of the year, and if the Comic-Con response is any indication, December is going to belong to Doctor Doom.
For the 662, this one is appointment viewing. Whether you grew up on the Raimi Spider-Man films, the Fox X-Men or the MCU proper, Doomsday is aiming to be the movie where all of it finally collides — and the first trailer suggests it might actually pull it off.
There are still mysteries the trailer refuses to solve. Doom’s full plan remains under wraps, the fate of several original Avengers is being kept deliberately vague, and Marvel has said nothing about which characters might not survive the two-film arc. Rumors of additional surprise cameos — from Deadpool to Wolverine — went unaddressed in Hall H, which fans have taken as confirmation that Marvel is saving its biggest reveals for the theater.
What is certain is that the road to December runs through a marketing campaign unlike anything Marvel has attempted since Endgame. Expect character posters, a Super Bowl-sized push early next year for Secret Wars, and a steady drip of new footage as the release date approaches. The Multiverse Saga has been building to this moment for six years — and as of this week, the endgame is finally in view.
