Air Force One: Trump Debuts $400M Qatari-Gifted Jet

Air Force One entered a new era Wednesday as President Donald Trump took the maiden flight aboard a retrofitted Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar, departing Joint Base Andrews in Maryland bound for North Dakota. The $400 million aircraft marks one of the most visible — and contested — changes to the symbols of the American presidency in decades.

The jet lifted off on July 1, 2026, carrying Trump to Medora, North Dakota, where he is scheduled to tour the newly built Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library ahead of its public opening on July 4. The visit is part of a broader slate of events tied to celebrations of the nation’s 250th birthday, and the president was expected to deliver remarks later in the day.

The aircraft itself has become the story. The refurbished 747 was gifted to the United States by Qatar last year and has since been repainted in Trump’s preferred color scheme: a navy belly with red and gold stripes that departs sharply from the iconic light-blue-and-white livery introduced during the Kennedy administration.

Inside, according to reported tours of the plane, the jet carries the luxury features Trump believes a commander-in-chief’s entourage should have — plush carpets, lie-flat seats, wood paneling, and a presidential seal embroidered onto the seat belts. Trump has described the plane in glowing terms, telling reporters the United States “couldn’t build a plane like this” on its own.

Trump has framed the aircraft as a practical necessity, arguing that the two aging jets that have served as Air Force One are roughly 35 years old and overdue for replacement. Boeing’s long-delayed program to build new presidential aircraft has run years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget, leaving the administration searching for alternatives.

The gift has nonetheless raised significant ethical and legal questions. Critics have warned that accepting a $400 million aircraft from a foreign government blurs constitutional lines around foreign emoluments and could create the appearance of influence over U.S. foreign policy. Supporters counter that the plane became U.S. government property and was retrofitted to American security standards.

Complicating the picture is the cost of that retrofit. Reports indicate the jet required extensive modifications — secure communications, defensive systems, and structural work — paid for using U.S. taxpayer dollars, meaning the “free” plane still carried a substantial public price tag before it was cleared to fly the president.

Security experts note that converting any commercial airframe into a true Air Force One is an enormous undertaking. The presidential aircraft must be hardened against a range of threats and equipped to function as a mobile command center, and independent analysts have questioned how quickly a donated foreign jet could meet those standards.

For Trump, the aircraft is more than transportation. Throughout his presidency he has treated Air Force One as a backdrop for messaging and a symbol of American strength, and the redesigned jet embeds his personal aesthetic more deeply into an institution that has historically outlasted individual administrations.

The North Dakota trip pairs the plane’s debut with a patriotic theme. The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, a 96,000-square-foot facility in Medora, is opening as the country prepares for its semiquincentennial, and the administration has leaned into the Fourth of July timing to tie the new aircraft to a celebration of national heritage.

What comes next is likely a continued political fight. Democrats and some ethics watchdogs have signaled they intend to press for details on the arrangement, while the White House maintains the transaction was handled appropriately. For now, the navy-and-gold 747 is airborne — a striking new emblem of the presidency and a lightning rod for debate over the ties between the Trump administration and Qatar.

The bottom line: Air Force One now flies in a bold new form, and the questions surrounding how it got there are unlikely to fade as quickly as the jet climbs.
